SAN JOSE — A man was arrested on suspicion of homicide after an unhoused person was found shot dead on a San Jose creek trail last week, according to authorities.

Ricardo Miranda, 31, of San Jose, was identified as the suspect in the death, arrested on Tuesday and booked for homicide, the San Jose Police Department said.

Officers responded Saturday afternoon to a report of a dead body at Remillard Court and Story Road and found a man dead of at least one gunshot wound.

The man has been identified as Ricardo Alejandro Pena Navarro, 54, who was homeless, according to authorities. It appeared he had been living in the area, police said. Authorities are still searching for a motive in the killing.

The killing is the 28th homicide of the year investigated by San Jose police. There have been 37 homicides recorded in the city this year overall, including nine people killed in the May 26 mass shooting at a VTA light-rail yard, which was investigated by the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office.
