OAKLAND — A man was fatally shot Monday night in West Oakland, police said.

Police were still trying to identify the man on Tuesday. He appears to be in his 40s, authorities said.

The man was found shot about 10:25 p.m. Monday while outside in the 3400 block of San Pablo Avenue, a mixture of residences and small businesses just south of Interstate 580.

He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:57 a.m. Tuesday.

Besides trying to identify the man, police were also trying to determine a motive for the shooting. No arrests had been announced as of midday Tuesday.

The killing is the 112th homicide investigated by Oakland police this year and the first since Nov. 14. The California Highway Patrol has also investigated six homicides this year on Oakland freeways.  Last year at this time Oakland police had investigated 127 homicides in the city.
